Rhode Island – HB 5466/SB 1023 (Electric Code)

Bill Summary: Both bills require the adoption of the latest edition of the NEC, including any amendments, by the Rhode Island State Building Code Commission.   The Building Code Commission recently adopted the 2017 NEC with an effective date of August 1, 2019.

These bills also require that all electrical work done in the state shall be in accordance with the latest edition of the NEC. 

The adoption of the NEC by the Building Code Commission shall be completed so that it will take effect on the first day of July of the year the edition is dated. 

PHTA members should note that NEC Article 680 ‘Swimming Pool Installations’ pertains to electrical work conducted on swimming pools and spas. 

Status: Both bills went into effect without the signature of Governor Gina Raimondo on July 19, 2019.
