APSP has been the accredited Standards Development Organization for the nation's pool and spa standards since 1983, and now counts 15 American standards under its purview. These national standards establish voluntary minimum guidelines that, when adopted by governments and agencies, have the force of law.
The 2012 edition of the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code is now available. Developed jointly with APSP and the International Code Council (ICC), the ISPSC establishes minimum regulations for public and residential pools, spas, and hot tubs, using prescriptive and performance-related provisions.

This standard applies to permanently installed residential inground swimming pools intended for non commerical use as a swimming pool by not more than three owner families and their guests and exceeding 24 inches (61 cm) in water depth.
