    All 50 U.S. State Governors have proclaimed May as National Water Safety Month in recognition of the importance of implementing safer water practices during the summer months. As families converge on aquatic centers, pools, splash pads, waterparks and open bodies of water for recreational water activities this Memorial Day weekend, it is vital to ensure safety is a priority for all people. The National Water Safety Month campaign supporters offer six important tips and reminders for parents and caregivers about safer water practices.

    The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) expressed concern today that many commercial pools & spas will be delayed in opening this summer season along the East Coast, especially in the Mid-Atlantic region, due to an unprecedented number of visa denials. Pools that will be impacted are those that supplement their American Lifeguard work force by recruiting lifeguards internationally through the Summer Work and Travel Exchange Visitor Program.  The swimming pool industry’s recruitment of overseas lifeguards has grown over the years due to the seasonal labor shortage caused by a variety of factors impacting the availability and interest of Americans pursuing seasonal employment.

    A coalition of water safety partners, including the American Red Cross, the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, the National Recreation and Park Association, the World Waterpark Association and several other water safety groups, will work together to promote May as National Water Safety Month.  National Water Safety Month is a campaign held during the month of May that raises awareness about water safety and highlights the importance pf public education regarding safer practices for kids and adults around the water.

    The International Code Council (ICC) held the 2018 Spring Committee Action Hearings last week in Columbus, Ohio to revise the International Family of Codes, including the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC). At the end of the three-stage process, approved changes will appear in the 2021 edition of the ISPSC to be published in the spring of 2020. There were 50 proposals submitted by The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP), other organizations, and individuals all with an eye to improve safety, clarity, and comprehensiveness of the code.

    The Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (ICC-SRCC) and the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) announced the release of the first edition of the Solar Pool and Spa Heating System Standard (ICC/APSP 902/SRCC 400-2017). Accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard, ICC/APSP/SRCC 400 was developed through the International Code Council’s consensus-based standard development process that brings together all stakeholders, including code officials, product and system manufacturers, design professionals, researchers, and facility owners and managers.
