Connecticut Pool Builder Charged with Manslaughter
According to the New Haven Register, Greenwich police say a swimming pool company president faces a second-degree manslaughter charge in connection with an incident last year in which a 6-year-old boy drowned after his arm was trapped in an intake valve of an inground swimming pool. APSP Creates Safety PSAs with Famed Olympic Swimmers
APSP was offered a very exciting opportunity through the International Swimming Hall of Fame (www.ishof.org) and the World Waterpark Association (www.waterparks.org). APSP participated in a photo shoot in La Mirada, California, on July 17, to produce TV and radio Public Service Announcements with Olympic gold-medalist swimmers Mark Spitz and Janet Evans. Segments included the following safety topics: Adult Supervision, Layers of Protection, Importance of Learning to Swim and Following Posted Safety Rules. Another shoot is planned for early September with other Olympic swimmers. Look for more information in IC this fall when the project is completed and the PSAs are ready for viewing and distribution.
APSP and NSPF to Jointly Fund Important Research Study:
“Does Regular Swimming Reduce your Risk of Dying?”
That’s the question APSP hopes to have answered in directing its third and final grant of $30,000 through the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) to partially fund the second year of Dr. Steven Blair’s two-year research project, “The Health Benefits of Swimming: A Prospective Study of Morbidity and Mortality in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study.” NSPF has funded the balance of this $75,000 study which will provide some real science on the health benefits of swimming and regular aquatic exercise. Dr. Blair is the keynote speaker at this year’s World Aquatic Health Conference where he will discuss the results of the first-year study. MORE
