Good News! Senate Passes Returning Worker Exemption
The U.S. Senate voted October 16 to extend a provision of the visa program that enables small businesses to rehire seasonal foreign workers. The returning worker exemption expired September 30, causing many business owners to fear that they would be unable to hire seasonal foreign workers in 2008. The legislation, as part of the Senate spending bill for Commerce, Justice and Science, would extend the exemption through September 30, 2008. The Senate bill must still be reconciled with a House version, and the final legislation must be signed by President Bush. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD), who has championed the provision, said she would continue working to make it permanent.
